2 Warren officers recovering after hitting black ice, crashing patrol car

WARREN, Mich. – Debris is still scattered across the intersection of Toepher and Hoover in Warren, where black ice put two Warren Police Officers in a life-or-death situation over the weekend.

"The minute they hit that ice, they lost all control of the vehicle. It was just gone," said Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green.

From pot holes to thick ice, Local 4 cameras caught drivers barely getting by the intersection on the tough road conditions in the light of day.

Green has released dash cam video to show what the conditions were when the crash happened at 9 p.m. Sunday.

"I don't think their speed was out of control, but they were certainly doing what they get paid to do and that's to catch bad guys," said Green.

The officers were called to assist Roseville police on a robbery at the time of the crash. Their pursuit took them over the ice and crashing into a light pole, leaving behind a mangled car and Police Officer Kim Teolis in bad shape.

"She has a broken pelvis, injured knee and is banged up pretty bad," said Commissioner Green. "Officer Kim Teolis has been of the force 13 years but will need some time recovering, she's in surgical intensive care."

The patrol car had to be cut open to get Teolis out of the driver's seat. It's also visible on the windshield where her partner, Officer McCabe, hit his head.
