2 women killed in violent crash on Michigan Avenue in Canton Township

Women were graduates of Belleville High School; 2 others hospitalized in Canton Township crash

CANTON, Mich. – Local 4 has learned that two Bellville High School grads were killed Tuesday morning in a violent crash on Michigan Avenue in Canton Township.

Danielle Beavers and Brooke Kennedy died when the Chevy Cavalier they were passengers in collided with a Monte Carlo at about 3 a.m.

Police said Beavers and Kennedy were in the car with a 24-year-old man going southbound on Canton Center Road when it was hit by a Monte Carlo traveling eastbound on Michigan Avenue. The 24-year-old Cavalier driver and 21-year-old driver of the Monte Carlo are hospitalized.

Local 4 has learned that the women were both servers at a nearby Ruby Tuesday.

"I just had goose bumps like crazy. I had to take a minute and go to the bathroom," said friend Jessica Hughes. "You can't even say much about it. It's been a rough day.  They're going to be missed."

Hughes has known Kennedy since the 4th grade.

"It's just really sad," she said. "You just have to cherish everything."

Police said it doesn't appear alcohol or speed was a factor and that one of the cars might have ran a red light.

The Van Buren Public Schools superintendent, Mike Van Tassel, released the following statement on the tragic crash:

"The Van Buren Public Schools Family is deeply saddened to learn today of a tragic automobile accident that resulted in the deaths of two former students, Brooke Kennedy and Danielle Beavers. Both of these wonderful young ladies were members of the Van Buren School family since elementary school. Our hearts and prayers are with their families and friends at this terrible time.

As a service to our community, we will have a grief counselor available at the Administration Building at 555 W. Columbia on Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on a walk-in basis."
