ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two people were arrested Wednesday after they were caught trying to break into a rental property in Ann Arbor, using a set of master keys that were recently stolen from the property manager's vehicle.
A maintenance worker for the apartment rental company, which is managed by Arch Realty, called police after he saw two men unsuccessfully try to enter one of the apartments on the 300 block of Thompson.
Moments later, police arrested the two Ypsilanti men, ages 17 and 20 without incident in the area of Thompson and Packard streets.
Officers said the 20-year-old had several master keys that were stolen from the vehicle of the Arch Realty Manager on June 28.
Ann Arbor police Lt. Myron Blackwell said the stolen keys could have provided access to hundreds of properties across the city.
"This involves over 238 properties of Arch Realty and probably about 1,000 residents," Blackwell said.
There have been two confirmed break-ins at homes accessible with the stolen keys.
The company sent an e-mail to residents, alerting them to the fact that there have been several break-ins where it appears entry wasn’t forced.
Police said it's unclear of the man who had the key on him was involved in the initial theft of the keys.
The older man will be arraigned Friday at the Washtenaw County Jail for possessing stolen property.
