MONROE, Mich. -- Three people were hurt and one died after a boating accident Saturday night on the River Raisin.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said 27-year-old Chad Edmonds was driving the boat at about 11 p.m. when it veered underneath an old steel pier, sheering off the windshield and ejecting him from the boat.
Three other people were hurt with minor injuries but were able to stop the boat and call for help. While the three were rescued around 11:45 p.m. and taken to an area hospital, deputies searched for Edmonds.
He was found just before 2 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
Edmonds’ father, Lenny, said his only son was an experienced boater and a married father of two.
"I don't know who was on the boat. They said he left the bar up here. I don't know," Lenny Edmonds said. "I just got a knock on the door, and they sprung it on it me. That's all I know."
Gregory Hunter was on a nearby boat when the crash happened. He said he helped the victims onto his friend's boat.
"They truly were wanting to find this fellow," Hunter said. "So, we did what we could."
Hunter said there are old parts of docks sticking out everywhere in the water and at night it can be very dangerous for boaters.
The Monroe Police Accident Investigation Team is investigating.
