Boy Scout Trailer Stolen

26-Member Troop Was Going To Take Trailer To Camp

POSTED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009
UPDATED: 7:18 pm EDT July 15, 2009

A local Boy Scout troop is trying to live by the Boy Scouts of America motto, "be prepared" as they look for a new trailer for their upcoming trip after their 12-foot-long cargo trailer was stolen over the weekend.

The trailer was stolen from a storage building at the St. Clement School athletic field along Engleman Road Saturday.

Assistant Scout Master Ray Gibson lives down the road from the storage unit and says he actually saw it being hauled away in the afternoon by a silver two-door Chevrolet.

"It was just by accident," said Gibson. "Had I not been walking out of the house, it would have been a few more days until we discovered it was stolen."

The 26-member Troop 1444, ranging in ages from fifth-graders to 17 -years old, was supposed to use the trailer to pack their belongings for a summer camping trip to at Alger, Mich., at the end of July.

"We'll still go on with our event, it will just make it a little harder," said Gibson.

The trailer, which contained a few lanterns, propane cans and a folding picnic table when it was stolen was going to be used to store the boys' things.

Gibson said the boys had raised money for three years by working at concession stands at Detroit Lions games to buy the trailer.

Although the boys are saddened by the theft, they plan on raising more money to buy another trailer.

"I feel very disappointed, and I am sure the other guys do too," said Boy Scout Daniel Gibson.

Boy Scout Kyle Krivel suggested the thieves should have done what they will now probably have to do – rent a U-Haul.

"Give us our trailer back. Don't be so evil. I mean rent a U-Haul -- if worst comes to worst," said Krivel.

Ray Gibson described the thief as a white male, between the ages of 25 and 35 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Centerline Police Department.
