Man Accused In Fatal Accident In Court

Driver Told McDonald's Employee He Was Drunk Before Crash, Police Say

POSTED: Monday, July 20, 2009
UPDATED: 11:20 am EDT July 31,2009

A man accused driving drunk and killing one and injuring three others was in court on Friday.

Thomas Scott Grobbel, 24, of Madison Heights, has been charged in connection with the fatal accident on Interstate 696 in Royal Oak last week.

Grobbel faces nine counts in all:

  • One count of operating under the influence while impaired causing death
  • One count of involuntary manslaughter
  • One count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident
  • Two counts of causing serious personal injury
  • Two counts of felonious driving
  • Two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious personal injury accident

The preliminary examination has been rescheduled for Sept. 9 because discovery was incomplete. Both the prosecution and defense are waiting for lab tests and medical records.

Grobbel's uncle told Local 4 he is a good kid who made a bad decision.

Andrew Gene Ross, 23, of Royal Oak, died in the crash. His father, Andrew Gene Doran, 45, also of Royal Oak, was seriously injured in the crash, as was Jared Nicholas Charest, 25, of Royal Oak.

The driver, Michael William Myke, 33, of Royal Oak suffered minor injures.

Initially, police had a hard time identifying the victims in the crash because none of the men were carrying identification because they all had revoked or restricted licenses. Myke had a restricted license and was only supposed to be driving to and from work. However, that night he drove the men home from a bar, police said.

Police said Grobbel was drunk when he smashed his pickup truck into the van traveling 97 miles per hour on the westbound Interstate 696 exit ramp of Woodward Avenue and then fled on foot.

Police said Grobbel ditched his pickup truck, but a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter helped state police locate him hiding in bushes at Main Street and Kenilworth Avenue.

"He knew the police department was out looking for him and that's why he attempted to elude us," said Michigan State Sgt. Jeff Munoz.

About 10 minutes before the crash, Grobbel stopped at the McDonald's in Warren and hit a concrete divider at the drive-through, police said.

The nald's drive-through attendant, Tony Garrisi, called 911 after the driver came within 2 inches of the window and almost hit her. Police arrived moments later, but the man had already left.

"He was so drunk his eyes were glossy and he couldn't keep them open," Garrisi told the 911 operator.

Garrisi said the man told her he had been drinking and driving, but he insisted that he had to get home.

Garrisi said after she handed the man the food, he said, "I advise you not to drink and drive," and then the man went up the curb and knocked out a guardrail and drove off.

Garrisi said she wishes there was more she could have done to prevent the fatal crash.

Another woman told police that the man was going very fast on I-696 and almost crashed into her before he crashed into the van.

"He was traveling at a very high rate of speed. It's unknown how high, but we do have accident investigators at the scene attempting to figure that out," said Munoz.

Grobbel refused a Breathalyzer at the scene, police said, but the courts have ordered a blood test.

Grobbel has an extensive driving record. According to the secretary of state, in 2003 in Royal Oak he disobeyed a stop sign; then in 2005 he was implicated in a drug crime in Detroit; In 2006, he was cited in Eastpointe and Harper Woods and his license was suspended. In 2007, he was cited again in Roseville.

He did have a valid driver's license at the time of the crash.
