Proposed budget totals approximately $631 million

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Finance Committee of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing Thursday on the 2014 Macomb County budget.

County officials said Macomb County's 2014 budget is ready for final approval, saying the budget is balanced for the third year in a row.

"We are optimistic about the future of the economy and are dedicated to taking care of our current employees while continuing to create efficiencies in county government to provide the best service at the least amount of tax dollars," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel.

Following the hearing, the committee says it will hold a meeting to review the proposed budget, totaling approximately $631 million.

The proposed budget was presented to the Board by the Office of the County Executive in July for evaluation and consideration.

County officials said several amendments to enhance the proposed budget are expected to be discussed by the Board of Commissioners. Areas for potential improvement include prosecutorial services, clerk services, senior nutrition services and veterans services.

The county says new budgeting practices, under the executive form of government, have brought the fund balance back to previous levels before deficit spending eroded their financial reserves. Now that fiscal stability has been obtained, county officials said they will make compensation adjustments to their existing employees.

"We've transformed from deficits and an uncertain fiscal future to three straight years of responsible balanced budgets submitted on time and without a structural deficit," said Peter Provenzano, Macomb County's chief financial officer.

A Full Board meeting of the Board of Commissioners will follow to consider recommendations from the Finance Committee and consider final approval of the budget.
