Couple Accused Of Leaving Kids Alone

Couple Accused Of Leaving Children While They Went To The Pool

POSTED: Wednesday, July 22, 2009
UPDATED: 7:59 pm EDT July 22, 2009

A Holly couple, accused of leaving their children alone in a Florida hotel room, told police this was not the first time they left their children on their own.

The couple was arrested in Orlando, Fla., where they were on vacation with their two foster children ages 2 and 4.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department in Florida said Stephen Simmons, 49, and his wife Kimberly, 41, were taken into custody July 17 at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort in Florida, accused of leaving their children alone in a hotel room while they went to the pool.

A housekeeper, who opened the hotel room to clean it, found the two children alone. According to the police report, the housekeeper waited five minutes for an adult to return to the room, and then reported the incident to a supervisor and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was called in to investigate.

Walt Disney World security searched the entire resort to find the people who rented the room. The Simmonses were found by the pool nearly two hours after the children were discovered by themselves.

According to the police report, Kimberly Simmons told officers she put the children down for a nap and then went down to the pool for a couple hours. Her husband, Stephen, seemed OK with the arrangement. Both of them were at the pool with Kimberly’s nephew.

Apparently the couple admitted to officers in Florida that this was not the first time they had left their children unattended.

The parents were arrested on child neglect charges. They were each released on $2,000 bond.

The foster children lived with the couple for almost two years. They were taken away by a child protective investigator with the Florida Department of Children and Families. It is believed the children are now in the custody of Michigan Child Services, but it is unclear where they will end up.

Local 4 tried to speak with Kimberly Simmons on Wednesday, but she would not open her door to answer any questions.

A preliminary hearing for the couple will be held on Aug. 6 in Florida.
