GROSSE ILE, Mich. -- Cleanup continued Tuesday in the Grosse Ile area after a powerful, straight-line winded storm hit Monday, creating a mess of the landscape and causing thousands of dollars in damage.
The National Weather Service called the caustic weather that hit the area a microburst.
Grosse Ile Cleans Up After StormResidents on nearby Hickory Island said the storm was sudden and brought rain that came down sideways in torrents.
"It was pretty devastating, amazing ... but I guess things could have been worse, no one was hurt," said resident Matt Dubois.
Debris and uprooted trees were swept up in wind gusts and scattered everywhere. Several homes had tree limbs fall on their roofs. Resident Janet Bodell said a tree landed on her roof, causing it to cave and blow out windows in her home.
Bodell said she and her husband have lived in their home for more than 30 years, and that she expects it to take months to repair not only the damage from the tree but the damage from water that saturated their home as a result.
"The house is devastated ... nothing like this has happened before," Bodell said. "But all three families that have lived here have been happy so we're not going to let that end with this storm." Bodell said.
Homeowner Gene Robb said he expects the damage to his house to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Crews used chainsaws and a 20-ton crane to remove a tree that had fallen onto Robb's house.
Several residents reported losing power during the storm but DTE Energy said all of the power was restored late Monday evening.
