YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Michigan State Police said a teen died Saturday after a tractor trailer collided with a minivan that was carrying three people on Interstate 94 in Ypsilanti Township.
Police said the tractor-trailer had pulled over on eastbound I-94 near Michigan Avenue for a tire check and was merging back on the interstate when it was hit from behind by the minivan.
Police said a mother and her two teenage children were inside the minivan.
The mother and one of the teenagers were seriously hurt but are expected to recover, police said.
The other teenager died.
Sources said the teen who died was a 16-year-old girl who attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte.
The driver and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were not hurt.
Police said the victims had been wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not considered a factor in the crash.
The accident shut down the interstate between Huron Street and Michigan Avenue for several hours.
The stretch has since reopened.
