Dismembered Body Found In Freezer

Man Arrested In Connection With Gruesome Discovery

POSTED: Friday, September 4, 2009
UPDATED: 10:57 am EDT September 6, 2009

A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a dismembered body found inside a freezer.

Police found the body of a man in his 50s Friday inside a freezer in the basement of a two-family flat on the 5500 block of Cadieux.

Police said the son of the woman who lives in the upper flat admitted to chopping-up the body and placing it in a freezer.

The man told police the victim was a homeless man who was already dead either of natural causes or a drug overdose. He said when he discovered the body, he did not know what to do with it so he dismembered it and placed it in zip lock bags and put it inside the freezer.

Arson investigators were placed on the case because the body had also been burned before it was dismembered.

The woman's son and another person remain in police custody as they continue to investigate.

Police said they learned of the body earlier in the day when the man's girlfriend came to the police station with the victim's identification and said he was slain and placed in the freezer.

The victim's identity has not been released. The Medical Examiner's Office came to get the body Friday.

Neighbors said the family moved into the eastside Detroit home about a year ago.

"I am totally speechless. I really don't know this is crazy," said neighbor Eva Poole.
