Man Charged In 2 Murders Back In Jail

No Students Injured

POSTED: Friday, September 11, 2009
UPDATED: 2:25 pm EDT September 14, 2009

A man charged with killing two people, including an abortion protester, is back in jail after being treated at a hospital over the weekend following a suicide attempt, a sheriff said Monday.

Harlan Drake shattered a television and used the broken glass to cut his arm, Sheriff George Braidwood said.

Staff at the Shiawassee County jail had been checking Harlan Drake every 15 minutes and responded Saturday when they heard the TV break, Braidwood said. Drake was treated at a hospital and returned to the jail Saturday night, he said.

"Since then he's been fine. He's been cooperative. He's been very passive," Braidwood said.

Drake, 33, is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shootings of James Pouillon and Mike Fuoss. He was arrested Friday.

Pouillon, 63, was a well-known abortion protester in Owosso, 70 miles northwest of Detroit. He was gunned down in a drive-by shooting while holding a sign near the high school.

"These kids are visibly shaken," said parent Deb Henry. "These kids are very upset."

"My son actually saw him laying there. He was pretty emotional about that," said one parent, who wished to remain anonymous.

Authorities say Drake was angered by the graphic image of an aborted fetus.

One of the many witnesses took down the license plate number of the suspect's car and police arrested Drake at his apartment about an hour later.

Fuoss, 61, was subsequently shot at his gravel company, just outside Owosso. Investigators said Drake's mother once worked there, but they're not certain how that fits into a possible motive.

As the school shooting was being investigated, authorities got a call at about 8:17 a.m. from an employee at Fuouss Gravel to report that Fuoss' body was discovered in his office on Busha Road near M-21 in Owosso Township.

According to Owosso Police Chief Michael Compeau, while Drake was in the police cruiser, he heard that call being radioed through by dispatch and confessed to both shootings.

Authorities said Drake disclosed plans to pursue a third target, real-estate agent James Howe. Drake's mother also had worked with Howe.

Drake likely will have an attorney assigned to his case Monday.

President Barack Obama called Pouillon's killing "deplorable" on Sunday, the same day more than 200 people attended a vigil near the site where he was shot.
