Panel Approves Royal Oak Theater

Royal Oak Movie, Bar Complex Gets Liquor License

POSTED: Wednesday, September 16, 2009
UPDATED: 4:42 pm EST November 11, 2009

The Royal Oak Plannining Commission voted 7-1 to approve a $13 million entertainment complex for the corner of 11 Mile Road and Main Street.

The project now goes to the city council for a final vote.

A 10-screen Emagine movie theater, 16-lane bowling alley and restaurant complex has been proposed for the site.

"We believe that the Emagine Theater is the right venue, right time for Royal Oak," said Dennis Cowen of Emagine Theater.

The city has already been through a series of meetings on the project.

"I think it will bring an additional amount of people who probably haven't experienced our downtown, which I think is good," said Royal Oak Commissioner Gary Lelito.

Some residents voiced concerns about traffic flow and whether an estimated 560 parking spaces the project includes will be enough.

"Take Birmingham for example. Birmingham has the Palladium for instance and they have a big problem with their parking," said resident Joan Bowers.

However, other residents feel more business means more jobs and that's a good thing in this economy.

"Royal Oak needs the business. We all need the money coming in here," said Royal Oak resident Sharon Juergene. "Michigan needs it. So if anybody wants to expand, why not."

In September, Royal Oak Commissioners gave the approval, in a 5-1 vote, for a liquor license to investor Paul Glantz. Glantz owns and operates two Emagine theaters in Novi and Canton and is a 5 percent shareholder in Woodhaven's Emagine theater.

Glantz must now hire architects and submit plans to the city, and then another hearing would be scheduled.

"It will be close. It will be a place that you can go and get a beer. I know Emagine allows alcohol inside its theaters. I think it's only positive," said Ferndale resident Michael Miller.
