21-year-old man charged in shooting of Detroit police sergeant at gas station

DETROIT – A 21-year-old man was charged Thursday in connection to the non-fatal shooting of a Detroit police sergeant.

Marquise Cromer is charged with one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of resisting and obstructing a police officer causing serious impairment, three counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer, one count of possession of a short barreled shotgun and felony firearms violations.

He was charged Tuesday with two counts of assault with intent to murder, firearms discharge in a building causing injury and felony firearms violations in connection to the shooting of his father. He was arraigned on those charges the same day.

Cromer is expected to be arraigned Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Cop shot

Authorities were looking for Cromer after his father was shot Sunday. The Detroit Police Department received a call Monday evening that Cromer was seen in a restaurant in the 15000 block of East 7 Mile Road.

Officers saw Cromer run from the restaurant to a Sunoco gas station at 7 Mile Road and Hayes Street.

A sergeant from the Detroit Police Department’s 9th precinct was pursuing Cromer when the shots were fired. The sergeant came around a corner and was shot in the shoulder.

He was taken to the Saint John Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery.

After the shooting, police say Cromer tried to hop a fence but was tackled by backup officers. Cromer was uncooperative and resisted arrest, according to authorities. A sawed-off shotgun was recovered during the incident.

Detroit police Chief James Craig applauded the sergeant’s bravery.

“Detroit police officers run toward the danger,” he said.

Father shot during dinner

Police were searching for Cromer in connection to the shooting of his father the day before.

Sterling Cromer, 62, said his 21-year-old son came home Sunday while he was eating dinner with his wife.

According to police, Marquise Cromer went upstairs and came down with a sawed-off shotgun, then shot his father in the foot. Police said Marquise Cromer suffers from depression.

The shooting was reported at about 5 p.m. in the 2100 block of Dickerson Street.

The parents were able to escape the home to a neighbor’s house while their son was trying to reload.
