DEARBORN, Mich. -- As word spread of the statue of Saddam Hussein toppling over in Baghdad, Iraq, Wednesday, people took to the streets of Dearborn, one of the largest Arab-American populations in the United States.
A spontaneous parade filled Warren Avenue, from Schaeffer to Greenfield, around noon as Dearborn residents yelled, "No more Saddam." Residents told Local 4 they believed the war is almost over.
Many people carried the original Iraqi flag, not the flag that was changed under the regime of Saddam, Local 4 reported. American flags were plentiful on cars as drivers honked their horns and flashed peace signs.
Women in traditional Arab dress, wearing coverings on their heads, also carried large American flags on poles and waved them back and forth through the air.
A man who said his father was killed by Saddam seven years ago carried an original Iraqi flag and said he wished the Iraqi regime had been conquered a long time ago.
Police were at the scene working to keep the crowd under control.
