Family Finds Spider In Grapes

Family Says Black Widow Popped Up In Bunch Of Red Grapes

POSTED: Monday, September 21, 2009
UPDATED: 2:32 pm EDT September 22,2009

A metro Detroit family said they found a black widow spider in grapes they purchased from a local grocery store.

Albertos Pryor, his wife, Kimberly, and their three sons said they love munching on red grapes. But the produce they bought Sunday from a Meijer store in Auburn Hills contained a poisonous passenger.

“I wanted to get it in something so it didn’t get loose in the house,” said Albertos Pryor. “I ran back over and got a glass jar, and just took some foil and kind of brushed him into the jar.”

The hourglass markings on the spider’s underside indicate it’s a black widow spider, which carry poisonous bites.

“I was really upset. Like I said, I have kids here,” Kimberly Pryor said.

The Pontiac couple said they called the store but that a store manager didn’t seem concerned about the finding.

“The manager told me to throw the spider in the toilet, flush it down, just eat my grapes and forget about it,” Kimberly Pryor said.

But the concerned mother said she wants others to be warned.

“I know stuff happens, you know. You can’t always catch everything,” she said. “But they could at least apologize for it.”

Meijer released this statement about the incident: “We go to great lengths to ensure the produce in our stores is fresh and safe. This includes working with our produce suppliers to ensure they observe the highest levels of food safety protocols and multiple levels of inspection.”

The grapes were grown in California, but research done by the family online said the spider could be native to northern Michigan, where black widows have a space between their markings -- similar to the one in their grapes.
