DETROIT -- A local pizza parlor gave away free pizzas Tuesday to customers in celebration of the Detroit Lions and their first win in almost two years and the offer has drawn huge crowds.
Four different Shield's restaurants gave away the pies from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for dine-in customers.
"We're avid supporters of the Detroit Lions and all of the sports teams here in the Motor City," said Peter Andoni of Shield's in a news release. "We want to show our loyalty by hosting a free pizza party to celebrate the Lion's first win."
One to two customers received a small pizza, parties of three or more were served a large pizza.
Local 4 found long lines of customers winding completely around the Shield's restaurant in Southfield before the offer began at 5 p.m.
Inside, Sandy Guntzviller said she is a Lions fan but she has other reasons to come out.
"I'm unemployed and I like Shield's pizza," Guntzviller said.
Anthony Sweet was one of a party of four. He said he was happy about the Lions victory and the free pizza offer from Shield's.
"I'm very happy. We don't have to cook," Sweet said.
The free pizza was offered at the following Shield's locations: Troy (1476 W. Maple), Southfield (25101 Telegraph), Macomb Township (50750 Romeo Plank), and Rochester Hills (1488 Rochester Road).
