CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Clinton Township Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding the driver responsible for a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist early Sunday morning.
Police said 41-year-old John Destafanis was traveling southbound on Gratiot Avenue just south of Quinn Road at about midnight when the collision occurred.
“There’s a man in the street on Gratiot. He looks like he was either hit or fell off his bicycle and he’s not moving,” a woman said in a 911 call.
Destafanis was taken to an area hospital, and is listed in critical condition.
“He cared more about other people than he did for himself. He was a very giving person,” said Destafanis’ brother, Cesare.
Destafanis is the father of four.
“Please come forward. We don’t judge, we just want to know who did it,” said Destafanis’ daughter, Deanne.
Clinton Township police Lt. Anthony Greene said pieces of the car that hit Destafanis were recovered at the scene.
Greene said investigators have determined that it was a blue Chevy Corvette that hit Destafanis, and that the sports car never stopped.
“It appears the vehicle did not stop at all,” Greene said.
Greene said Destafanis was thrown 75 feet in the air.
“Contact the police if you know anyone that’s driving this dark blue metallic Chevy Corvette from 2001 or 2002,” Greene said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Clinton Township Police Department at 586-493-7817.
