WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. -- Two brothers from Michigan are being called heroes after they pulled two people out of a burning car in Wisconsin on Friday.
Robert and Ray Lavoie, of Oakland County, said they were on a rural road in Oconomowoc, Wis., after getting lost on their way back to their hotel when they spotted a young man flagging for help.
“We could see around the corner that there was a car, and that it was on fire,” Robert Lavoie said.
Lavoie said three people had managed to climb out of the car after it apparently had crashed into a tree, but that there were still two in the backseat.
"There was somebody in the backseat, so we opened the door and yelled at them to come out. He didn't move, so I took a deep breath and went in there and grabbed him and pulled him out,” Lavoie said.
Lavoie said his family was on their back from a wedding reception and that one of his nieces called 911. Authorities arrived a short time later.
“They had a hard time finding us because we didn’t even know where we were,” Lavoie said.
Oconomowoc Lake police said five people, a 21-year-old, a 19-year-old and three other teenage boys, had been in the car.
All of the victims were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Lavoie said the situation was scary, but that it was fate he had made a wrong turn somewhere.
"I wasn't too excited about going in, but I just prayed that the car just wouldn't blow up while I was in there,” Lavoie said.
"Very heroic. Just incredible what they did. They were able to get the two remaining passengers out of the back," Oconomowoc Lake police Lt. Andy Helwig. "It could have been much worse. They were true heroes. I'm 100 percent those two passengers would have burnt in that car."
Police said the driver, the 21-year-old, might have been drinking.
