Teen Critically Injured On Hayride

POSTED: Monday, October 19, 2009
UPDATED: 12:00 pm EDT October 20, 2009

A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after he fell off a Halloween hayride Saturday and was pinned by the tractor's wheels.

The injured teen was with a youth group from the Trinity Free Will Baptist Church in Ypsilanti. The youth group was taking a fall tour on Cornwell Lane near West Lane in Hamburg Township when one rider noticed another rider fall off the trailer.

The Ypsilanti teen was pinned under the trailer near the axle. He was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Police said that the teen appeared to have a major head injury and he may have been crushed by the weight of the trailer.

Witnesses said five people were on the Kawasaki Mule off-road vehicle and 10 people were on the trailer that was being pulled by the ORV.

"Hayrides can be great fun they can also be very dangerous. Adults need to closely monitor the riders and ensure safety precautions are being taken," said Hamburg Township Police Chief Steve Luciano.
