MELVINDALE, Mich. -- The season is over for the assistant varsity football coach at Melvindale High School. The board of education has voted to fire Denny Howard after he allegedly posted fliers inside a boys locker room that included racial slurs.
It was a packed house at the school board meeting Monday night, as parents and players spoke out in support of Howard. The board spent over 2 hours in a closed door meeting before announcing he was fired. Howard’s brother Phil, who is head coach of the team, claims he wasn’t aware of the contents of the fliers.
Melvindale beat Wyandotte Roosevelt High School 35-0 on Oct. 16 while playing in Wyandotte. The fliers were made to look as though Wyandotte’s coach wrote them.
The teams are known in the community to be strong sport rivals.
The top of the flier reads "Wyandotte Head Football Coach Ron Adams” and below are six statements in quote marks, some including racial slurs.
"Disrespect" and "Beat Respect Into Them" are also written in capital letters across the bottom.

"They do not represent my personal opinions or beliefs," Adams wrote. "As a coach, I believe Melvindale is a good football team with competent and capable athletes. I cannot comprehend why anyone would use racial slurs to motivate players."
District officials said they believe the coach made the flier up to rev up the competition.
“I believe they did it for some motivational purposes to get the kids fired up,” said Melvindale Schools Superintendent Cora Kelly. “It was a serious error in judgment and I think they realize it now.”
The board voted to let the head coach finish the season. After that he will be suspended.
At one point, the team threatened to call it a season if the head coach was let go. “If he is forced to quite then me and the team will not play again,” say Melvindale Varsity Football Player, Wayne Pettus.
The team threw their jerseys on the ground in support of their coaches.
The undefeated team will continue playing.
Both Phil and Denny’s mother serves on the school board.
