MT. CLEMENS, Mich. -- A crackdown on sex offenders in Macomb County on Halloween resulted in 33 violations issued.

Parole agents from the Michigan Department of Corrections and Macomb County sheriff's deputies made 194 compliance checks on Halloween to make sure offenders were not in contact with children, drank alcohol or used drugs.

Beginning Thursday, teams conducted random spot checks of homes where sex offenders live to make sure children were not trick-or-treating there.

Sex offenders were told in advance that they were not allowed to put up Halloween decorations or lights or pass out candy Halloween night.

"Nothing whatsoever to attract children to their area near their house, around their house," said Macomb County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Dixon. "No porch lights. No advertising of any activity available to children at the house."

Police were also checking for any parole violations.

The violator will appear before the parole board, which could issue a violation or sanction or place the violator in another program.

"I think it's great," said Lisa Taylor, a Richmond parent. "I think the community should be informed about sexual predators in our neighborhoods, especially Richmond. It's a small community and we need to know these things for our kids."
