PONTIAC, Mich. -- Intruders have ransacked the Pontiac Silverdome a week before it's slated to go up for auction, Pontiac police said.
Police said vandals destroyed several large cabinets and a bar inside the vacant dome. Investigators with Pontiac police and Michigan State Police are working to determine is anything of value has been taken.
The dome has been empty for years, but there is a security team on patrol 24 hours a day.
But Local 4's Hank Winchester found several open gates during a visit to the dome Wednesday.
Pontiac has tried repeatedly to sell the 80,000-seat domed stadium since the Lions left in 2002 to move to Ford Field in Detroit.
The city spends about $1.5 million annually to maintain the structure.
Emergency Financial Manager Fred Leeb said an upcoming auction will hopefully determine the future of the dome.
Anyone interested in submitting a bid to buy the dome must do so to the city by Nov. 12.
