No Word On Officer's Condition

A Warren police officer was stabbed during an altercation Friday afternoon.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said they received a call about a disturbance at a car wash business at Groesbeck Highway and Eight Mile Road around 12:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, the person creating the disturbance was gone.

Several witnesses pointed to the home across the street from the car wash and said the 20-year-old suspect was in there. The house was located on the street on the 20000 block of Waltham Street.

When officers went to the home, the suspect went into the house, grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed one of the officers several times, police said.

"The officer was cut up on the skull area, cut on the left side of the cheek," said Dwyer.

Witness Ron Carnwath said the slashed officer stumbled out of the home and went back to his car and radioed, "Officer down, officer down!"

An excavation crew nearby saw the injured officer and ran over to assist him.

"He ran to his truck to grab some rags and as I'm kind of walking up to him, he says, 'Anything! grab a jacket.' So I took my jacket and held it to his head," said Carnwath.

The suspect was taken into custody by another officer.

The injured officer was transported to Bi-County Hospital.

There is no word on the officer's condition.

The suspect's name is not being released, but police said they are working on an attempted murder warrant.
