DETROIT -- Flames lit up the sky on Detroit's east side Saturday night as a vacant commercial building burned to the ground.
Firefighters spent more than two hours fighting the blaze at the building near Chene Street and Palmer Avenue.
"The whole thing was blazing pretty bad," said Chad Barnett, who saw the flames as he was driving by. "It was burned up really bad, I could hardly believe how extreme."
Michael Plair works a short distance from the building and said there's several vacant buildings in the area, which leaves the possibility for more fires.
"These old buildings need to be town down," Plair said. "They need to tear it down, clean it up and make it a better neighborhood."
Fire officials said old furniture, display cases and garbage inside the building fueled the fire.
No one was hurt in the fire. But fire officials said a firefighter was hurt while at the scene because he tripped over an open man hole.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire is still being investigated but that it is being called suspicious.
