Police: Men Open Fire On Car

2 Shot, 1 Hurt By Shattering Glass

UPDATED: 6:39 pm EST November 8, 2009

A carload of people armed with guns opened fire on a second car stopped at a traffic light Sunday, Detroit police said.

Police said four armed men in a 2002 black Impala fired several shots into another Impala that was carrying a 15-year-old, his uncle, his cousin and his sister’s boyfriend.

Monick Jones is the mother of a 15-year-old that was inside the car that was fired at.

“My son called me and said, ‘Mama come get me. The car just got shot up,’” Jones said.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Lappin Street on the city’s east side just after 3 p.m.

“They didn’t know the people. They just pulled up and it happened so fast,” said Detroit police Sgt. John Jenkins. "They just said all of a sudden somebody said something to them, they rolled down the window to respond, and they opened fire."

Police said one of the passengers was shot in the leg while another was grazed in the face. A third person was cut by shattering glass and taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Jenkins said the men were armed with long and short types of guns.

"A hail of bullets. It looks like at least nine bullets hit the vehicle," Jenkins said.

Witnesses told police the shooters fled north on Gratiot Avenue.

Police are searching for the black Impala.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit police.
