STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- General Dynamics Corp. is building a Detroit-area center it says will speed the design and construction of new military land vehicles.
General Dynamics Land Systems holds a groundbreaking ceremony Monday in Sterling Heights, where the division is headquartered. The company says the Mounted Maneuver Collaboration Center will cost $8.2 million, occupy 22,000 square feet and open next year.
Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller of Harrison Township will be the keynote speaker.
General Dynamics says the center will collaborate with the U.S. military and other companies in developing vehicles for the U.S. and its allies.
Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics has about 92,000 employees worldwide.
The company said the move was expected to create 500 new jobs.
Officials said as business expands, they are looking for highly skilled engineers to develop and build new and improved vehicle systems.
General Dynamics Land System will put a couple hundred engineers in its Sterling Heights office and another 100 will be sent to a newly developed facility in Shelby Township.
