Mich. Census Outreach Launched

Federal Official Helps Launch Michigan Effort

POSTED: Monday, November 9, 2009

The U.S. deputy commerce secretary is visiting Detroit to help launch the state's effort to raise awareness of the importance of the upcoming 2010 census.

Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dennis Hightowwer was scheduled to be in Detroit on Monday to help launch the state's Complete Count Committee, which is headed by Lt. Gov. John Cherry.

The committee will create plans to help the public understand the importance of completing the census questionnaire next March census, which helps determine the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal aid and seats in the U.S. House.

Cherry, state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith and health care advocate John Freeman are seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nod for next year's election. House Speaker Andy Dillon is considering a run.
