LIVONIA, Mich. -- Police in Livonia have issued a warning about crooks breaking into cars, taking garage door openers and then breaking into the victims’ homes.
Jennifer Olivera was at the AMC 20 Livonia theater Sunday night, and said she wasn’t aware of a recent rash of break-ins around metro Detroit stealing personal information from cars.
“I always felt it was safe,” Olivera said.
Police said a door opener and registration information stolen from a car that was parked at the theater were used in a home invasion in Livonia last Tuesday.
“I always thought this pace would be all lit up with video cameras and all," Olivera said.
Theater management would not comment on the security of the parking lot.
Thieves use the address found on the registration to find the home and then use the door opener to get inside.
Police said a similar incident occurred the week before, and that there’s been a trend of similar crimes in Livonia from November 2008 to February of this year.
“I keep my registration in my billfold. I got to start taking that garage door out now,” said resident Theodore Jackson.
