Rochester Hills Will Not Cull Deer

Rochester Hills Community Decides Not To Cull Deer

POSTED: Monday, November 9, 2009
UPDATED: 5:22 pm EST November 9, 2009

The Rochester Hills City Council voted not to use sharpshooters or any other deer cull methods in 2010.

The council adopted all of the recommendation from the Deer Management Advisory Committee, a group that was formed after residents protested Oakland County Sheriff's Sharpshooters killing deer herds last year.

The cull was originally initiated after a study stated that Rochester Hills had the highest deer-crash rates in the southeast Michigan.

The council, at the recommendation of the advisory board, will also continue with a ban on bow hunting in the city, and a ban on wildlife feeding.

An education program, which focuses on peak deer activities, will also be implemented.

Committee members wanted the city to designate October as Deer Awareness month, which would include city-sponsored seminars and Web site development and improved signage around the city.
