DETROIT -- A man who police said was drunk Friday when he smashed his vehicle into another vehicle and killed a 10-year-old boy and injured his mother and sister has been charged in connection with the crash.
Wayne County Prosecutors charged Nicholas Pedro Gamez, 20, of Detroit with second-degree murder; manslaughter with a motor vehicle; negligent homicide; driving on a suspended license, operating while intoxicated, causing death and operating while intoxicated, causing serious injury.
He was arraigned on the charges Monday at 1:30 p.m. He entered a not guilty plea and was denied bond.
Police said Gamez was drunk and driving very fast at about 7:15 p.m. when he rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped at a light at Fort and Dearborn roads.
Inside of the vehicle that was struck were a 47-year-old woman and her two children, an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy.
The victim's father identified the child at the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office. The child's name is D'Andre Hewlett.
The woman and her daughter were transported to an area hospital. The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition. The 11-year-old girl is in temporary serious condition.
Gamez is a construction worker and is married with two children. His mother-in-law, Brenda Maldonado, told Local 4 that he has had many personal problems since the recent death of his father.
She also said she is very sorry for what happened.
Gamez will be in court on Nov. 25 for a preliminary hearing.
