Washington, D.C. -- After receiving billions in governments loans, and emerging from bankruptcy, General Motors and Chrysler are still taking a lashing from some lawmakers.
The latest harsh remarks came from U.S. Sen. John McCain over the weekend.
During a NASCAR event in Arizona, the former Republican presidential candidate told the crowd, "Anybody believes that Chrysler is going to survive, I'd like to meet them."
McCain also took issue with the United Auto Workers, whom he feels haven't made enough concessions.
Tuesday, Michigan Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.) fired back, saying, "I think it was an incredible statement for the senator to make, clearly one that was misinformed and that continues to fuel this perception that Detroit is not going to be a world leader as we know it will be."
Peters backed up his statement with an invitation, adding, "I'm willing to meet with (McCain), not only will Chrysler survive, but prosper. More importantly Sen. McCain needs to come to Michigan, come to Auburn Hills and see there are thousands of people who believe in Chrysler."
Peters' office sent McCain an official invitation to Chrysler headquarters to clear up what Peters calls misconceptions.
"The senator talked about country first in his campaign," said Peters. "Quite honestly I am surprised that he didn't understand that standing up for American workers first is what we have to do."
