PONTIAC, Mich. -- Habitat for Humanity is putting homes in the hands of two Detroit-area families, with help from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and its employees.
Habitat's Oakland branch turned over a rehabilitated house in Pontiac on Friday to David and Marijayne Renny and their 2-year-old daughter Pixie. It's the first home the family has owned.
"To everyday know that I am coming home to just my own family and have our own space is just amazing," said David Renny, who said he has been forced to take on roommates to pay the bills.
The family has some final touches to put on the home, but they said they should be moved in by Christmas.
Habitat For Humanity spokesperson Sally Lepla said her people have been working on refurbishing the home since May.
Also Friday, the group's Macomb County branch is giving a three-bedroom house in Roseville to a single mother and her two children.
Employees from many Walmart stores spent weeks volunteering on the projects, as well as two other Habitat for Humanity homes in Grand Rapids and Lansing. The Benton, Ark.-based retailer also contributed money to the projects.
"Between 14 stores, over 80 associates volunteered over 300 hours," said Diane Behnke of Wal-Mart.
