DETROIT -- A Ypsilanti Township man is in police custody after police said they discovered about $2 million worth of cocaine inside of his vehicle.
Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said five kilos, or 11 pounds of cocaine are off the streets thanks to the work of two special operations unit officers.
The officers were on routine patrol when they heard gunshots last Friday in the area of Grandview and West 8 Mile Road
The officers pulled into the Splash Bar on West 8 Mile Road and saw a man quickly exit his 2004 silver Infiniti.
When officers approached the man, they said he smelled like burnt marijuana, so they searched his vehicle and found a duffel bag full of cocaine of the front passenger seat.
Charges against the Ypsilanti Township man are still pending. Police released a picture of the man being held on the charges. His name is Lawrence Martin.
This is the latest in a string of major drug busts by Detroit police. In the past week alone, officers have seized 40 grams of heroine and $662,000 in cash in one narcotics investigation, and 90 grams of cocaine and a handgun in another.
