EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The death of a Michigan State University student last November has been ruled accidental.
Dr. Dean Sienko, the chief medical examiner for Ingham County, said 22-year-old Brian Charles McMillen died from alcohol poisoning.
Sienko said toxicology reports revealed that McMillen’s blood-alcohol content at the time of this death was 0.35 percent.
The Adrian man was found unresponsive in his fraternity house, Alpha Gamma Rho, at about 5 a.m. Nov. 21.
McMillen's roommates told authorities he had gone to bed at about 2:30 a.m.
East Lansing Police Capt. Kim Johnson said McMillen did not have a pulse when authorities found him, and that CPR was immediately given.
McMillen was pronounced dead at Sparrow Hospital.
An estimated 200 people turned out two days after McMillen’s death for a candlelight vigil in his honor.
McMillen's father, George, told Local 4 at the vigil that he didn’t believe his son had died from alcohol poisoning, but instead of something relating to fatigue.
George McMillen said his son worked hard to balance school and a social life. He said he believes the stress of everything might have aggravated his son's pre-existing asthma condition.
"There were people with him, but nobody was with him all night," said David McCalla, chapter president of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. "We don't know if he drank or (if he did) how much he drank." . McMillen, a senior, was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and lived in the home on Evergreen Avenue. His roommates told police that there was no formal party Saturday night, and McMillen had been hanging out with friends.
"I think we're being as responsible as possible. There was no party, " McCalla said. "There were friends over and there was drinking in the house, but it was responsible."
The governing body for the MSU fraternities and sororities recently presented Alpha Gamma Rho with a Risk Management Award for their safety efforts.
McCalla said, in light of McMillan's death, each student group should think twice about its policies.
"I hope something positive comes out of it. It's a very sad thing," McCalla said. "I'm sure a lot of fraternities, as well as ours, will be revisiting their risk management policies. Everyone here at the fraternity is shocked at this point, and we don't know exactly what happened."
Local 4 has learned McMillen attended Adrian High School and graduated in 2005 as valedictorian. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
McMillen was to graduate in the spring with a major in chemistry and environmental soil science and a minor in Spanish. His father said he would have been the first in the family to graduate from college.
"I'll just remember Brian as a really nice guy, always willing to be there and comfort everyone else. He was just an outstanding individual," said McCalla.
