DETROIT -- Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Federation of Teachers agreed Tuesday to extend their contract through Dec 6.
Detroit Financial Manager Robert Bobb and Detroit Federation of Teachers President Keith Johnson said there has been good progress in the talks and they are 99 percent complete. Talks will resume next Monday.
At the short news conference, Tuesday morning, both Bobb and Johnson talked about the contract.
"This contract will challenge our membership to take ownership of this profession," Johnson said.
Bobb said that they have fallen victim to the process, procedures and protections of the customary teachers union contract.
Both said negotiators are taking a break for the holiday weekend.
Details of the contract were not discussed, but some of the items that will be included are:
peer assistance and review
meaningful staff developement programs
school-based performance bonuses
fellowship program to bring in professionals to team-teach with educators
a comprehensive teacher evaluation system
teachers input on new schools development
A vote on the contract could take place as early as next week.
