2 Arraigned On Police Crash Charges

Prosecutor Announces Charges Agist 2 In Connection With Police Cruiser Crash

POSTED: Wednesday, November 25, 2009
UPDATED: 1:59 pm EST November 25, 2009

Two Ypsilanti men were arraigned Wednesday on charges in connection with the crash of two Northville police cruisers early Monday morning.

The two cruisers smashed into each other at about 3:50 a.m. at the intersection of 6 Mile and Haggerty roads while in pursuit of an alleged auto theft.

Officers spotted a reported stolen vehicle at 8 Mile and Haggerty Roads, and a chase ensued.

"You got to make a decision. Do you chase or don't you chase? The residents in any community expect their police to engage and try to stop this stuff," said Northville Police Chief John Werth.

Police said the driver of one police car did a turnaround at the intersection at 6 Mile and Haggerty roads in an attempt to secure the intersection, and at the same time, a second squad car passing the intersection T-boned the first car.

Northville Police Officer Richard Babb underwent brain surgery Monday and remains in the hospital in stable condition. The driver of the other cruiser, Officer Daniel Jones is in good condition.

"This case evidences the risks and dangers that our law enforcement officers face minute-to-minute. Our thoughts and prayers remain with both the officers as we begin to bring these two defendants to justice, “said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

The stolen vehicle was ditched about half a mile from the crash scene. Investigators determined that the vehicle was stolen out of Van Buren Township.

Joshua Nyle Milligan, 22, and James Ryan Williams, 20, were arrested in connection with the stolen vehicle investigation.

Milligan has been charged with motor vehicle – unlawful driving away, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison; carrying a concealed weapon, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, and receiving and concealing stolen property, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Williams has been charged with second degree fleeing a police officer, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and operating with a suspended license causing serious injury, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. In addition, both men have been charged with controlled substance – delivery/manufacture of marijuana, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.
