Reeves Throws Herself Goodbye Party

Reeves Company Throws Party

Outgoing Detroit City Council member Martha Reeves is throwing herself a going-away party.

"Show business is better for me," said Reeves, who is also a legendary entertainer from Motown. "Politics is too crazy. We had three mayors in one year. Now what kind of politics is that?"

The event is called, "Come and Help Me Go Away Party," and the invitation lets attendees know that gifts are welcome.

The party will be Thursday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Bert's Marketplace in Eastern Market on Russell Street.

"It's one of those things that lit up like fire, that she should have a going away party," said Jail-Lee Dearing, who owns Bert's Marketplace. "She's done a lot to give people hope in this community."

Dearing, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on city council in November, said he does not think the idea of "gifts" is out of place.

"Ms Reeves loves flowers," said Dearing. "But I believe it's an opportunity for those who want to pay homage to her, to pay home to her in whatever which way they'd like. A lot of people respect and love her."

The bash will feature live performances, a jam session, an "old-school" dance contest and a raffle.

Martha Reeves Enterprises Inc. is throwing the party and is selling tickets for $5 in advance and $10 at the door.

Reeves became famous as the lead singer of the Motown girls group called Martha and the Vandellas.

Reeves was elected to the Detroit City Council in 2005. She lost her re-election bid in the August primary. Her last day in office will be Dec. 31.

Reeves has said she will return to a full-time schedule of performances with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
