HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Crews are building a makeshift gravel road to lead to the scene of a train derailment in Holly Township Wednesday.
A 22-car train derailed in Holly Township after floodwaters reportedly washed out a line of railroad tracks. Lori Kramer, who lives nearby, described the derailment as a "big boom" that shook her house.
The lead nine cars and two engines of the freight train went into the water around 1:30 a.m., Local 4 reported. Three of seven propane tankers derailed, but are reportedly not leaking. The cars on their sides were hauling car parts, the station learned.
"The land that the track sits on was gone," Oakland County Firefighter Lt. Jeremy Litz said. "It looked like it had been washed away by water."
The CSX train's conductor and engineer were reportedly injured. They were taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc and the extent of their injuries is not known, the station learned.
The rushing water also flooded surrounding streets in the area of Holly and Elliot roads, the station reported. Lahring and Elliot roads were washed out and have been closed, according to Holly police.
Police are investigating the possibility of a beaver dam break causing the flood.
Officers informed nearby residents about the situation. About 25 homes were evacuated due to flooding, according to the station's reports.
