DETROIT -- A judge has ordered silence for a Detroit political consultant who regularly talks to reporters and uses Twitter to comment on his corruption case.
The gag order posted Tuesday covers Sam Riddle, his defense lawyers and prosecutors.
U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said Riddle's public criticism could deprive the U.S. attorney's office of a fair trial by spoiling the jury pool next year.
On Twitter, Riddle responded Tuesday by writing, "I will continue to speak out, stay tuned."
In an interview with Local 4, Riddle said, "I will not be off facebook unless I’m behind bars."
Riddle, a four-year Army veteran, said he fought for the right to his free speech.
“I’ll go to jail, I’ll engage in a hunger strike. Because I believe that those freedoms that we were willing to die and kill for, are certainly worth going to jail for," he said.
Riddle is charged with receiving and delivering bribes on behalf of Monica Conyers, who was a Detroit City Council member. In a separate case, he's charged with brokering bribes for a Southfield councilman.
"I am innocent. And I fully believe a jury will find me innocent," Riddle said.
