A sport utility vehicle driving west on Mack Avenue reportedly crossed the center line and hit a man driving east in a van head on around 8:30 a.m., Local 4 learned. The occupants of the SUV were reportedly trapped inside as it rolled over.

Police do not believe the occupants of the SUV were wearing seat belts. The 2-year-old boy was riding on his mother's lap in the passenger seat, Local 4 reported.

Two women and a child were taken to an area hospital. An 8-year-old girl was listed in critical condition and the adults were listed in serious condition.

The van driver was treated for injuries at the scene and is expected to be OK, the station reported.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police believe the SUV driver may have tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone, according to the station's report.

The accident falls within the start date of a local two-week police campaign called "Click It or Ticket" where officers seek drivers not properly restrained in seat belts.

Officer Jim Hillock said people wonder when they receive tickets for not wearing a seat belt if the officers don't have anything better to do.

"Look at this fatality with a small child dead," Hillock said. "No, I don't have anything better to do."
