GIBRALTAR, Mich. -- A man wanted by authorities in Delaware for the shooting death of another man last November was taken into custody Wednesday morning after surrendering in Gibraltar.
U.S. marshals and area law enforcement agencies said they began searching for 29-year-old Daemont Wheeler Tuesday night when they received information that he was in the metro Detroit area.
"Before they could apprehend him, they received information that he took off on foot," said Gibraltar Police Chief Raymond Canterbury.
Wheeler was spotted in a wooded area of Gibraltar Wednesday morning, which prompted authorities to issue a lockdown for three schools -- Carlson High School, Schumate Middle School and Parsons Elementary.
"We were concerned that if he was still in the area, that if kids were driving to school or parents were dropping kids off, we didn't want him to make contact with them or make it into the school," Canterbury said.
Authorities set up a one-mile radius parameter and Wheeler surrendered himself around 10 a.m.
"I'm sure he came out because he knew that the SWAT team and other officers were after him," Canterbury said.
Wheeler will be extradited back to Delaware.
