Family: Drs. Operate On Wrong Side

Drs. Perform Brain Surgery On Wrong Side

POSTED: Tuesday, February 9, 2010
UPDATED: 6:44 pm EST February 9, 2010

A Flat Rock woman's family is suing Oakwood Hospital claiming doctors performed brain surgery on the wrong side of her head.

Deborah Blankenship, 48, died on Dec. 8, 2008.

Records show she arrived at the hospital on Aug. 7, 2007, with a severe headache. She was diagnosed with acute leak from an artery in her brain.

According to court documents, Dr. Hasnain Haider-Shah found the leak inside her head but was unable to block it.

Blankenship was rushed in for an emergency craniotomy, a procedure that cuts open the patient's skull.

Blankenship's family said the doctors mistakenly performed surgery on the right side of her brain before moving to the left side.

"It was only after they performed a right brain craniotomy, they determined it was on the left side of her brain," said the family's attorney.

Her family said the time lapse during the mistake left her with severe brain damage, according to the lawsuit.

There is no record with the state of Michigan that either doctor received any disciplinary action.

Oakwood Hospital released this statement.

"Our primary concern has always been for the patient and her family. In fact, after the surgery occurred, Oakwood took immediate action to communicate with the patient's family. We deeply regret the heartache they have experienced, and in an effort to respect the patient's family and adhere to patient privacy laws, we will not release information specific to the case."

However, the family said it does little to console them.

"I don't want this to happen to anyone else," said Blankenship's daughter Shanna Winkles.

Oakwood Hospital told Local 4 they have a safety initiative they call "Life Wings" and every staff member has been trained to take the proper time to be sure something like this never happens again.
