Woman Starts Brawl After Sentencing

Police Accuse Mother Of Helping Son With Attack

POSTED: Thursday, February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 7:57 pm EST March 11, 2010

A sheriff's deputy and a court employee have received minor injuries during a brawl that started when a Detroit mother being sentenced for murder attacked a guard.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said Tarranisha Davis became disruptive as Circuit Court Judge Daniel Ryan was sentencing her Thursday to 22 1/2 to 40 years in prison.

Relatives then joined the fray.

Napoleon said the 35-year-old Davis had to be handcuffed. Three other people were arrested. Contempt of court charges are pending, while charges of assault on a police officer also may be filed.

Tarranisha Davis and her son , 15-year-old Tremaine Davis were charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm charges after prosecutors said Tarranisha Davis drove her son to the Considine Little Rock Family Life Center on Oct. 8, 2009, and opened the hood of her vehicle where he then retrieved a hidden revolver.

Four shots were fired and one struck 19-year-old Demitry Jackson in the head, killing him.

Tarranisha Davis was sentenced to 270 months, up to 40 years, for the murder charge and also sentenced to two years in prison for the firearm charge.

Her son received 10 years to 25 years for the murder charge and two years for the firearm charge.

Prosecutors said Jackson was an innocent bystander who had gone to the center to play basketball.

During Tarranisha Davis’ trial, prosecutors argued that her actions directly influenced Jackson’s death.

“She made her son come back to the scene, she armed him, she prodded him,” prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said. “Just like a gun when you pull the trigger, he fired.”

Investigators said they believe Tremaine Davis had been involved in a fight at the center earlier in the day, and had been punched in the face.

Gas station surveillance video showing Tarranisha Davis’ vehicle at the scene of the shooting was showed in court.

The defense argued that there was plenty of unreasonable doubt regarding Tarranisha Davis’ intent in her actions, in addition to a lack of evidence and testimony.

“It is so salacious, it’s so titillating to say a mother and a son committed a crime that it turns people off immediately,” said defense attorney Lillian Diallo. “If you dislike her, I’m sorry, but you should be fair and listen to the evidence.”
