The two sides involved in a bridal shop brawl, which was caught on tape, came face-to-face again Wednesday in court.
Three male relatives of an unhappy bride-to-be were in a 46th District courtroom Wednesday for a pretrial hearing after police said they started a brawl inside the First Lady Prom and Bridal shop on Southfield Road in Lathrup Village.
Thamir Mikhail and Nashwan Petros, of Sterling Heights, and Nameer Kastaw, of Warren, each face two counts of misdemeanor assault.
Hekmat Putruss, who owns the shop, said the charges should be upgraded to felonies because of the estimated $20,000 in damage and a threat made toward him.
"'If you don't come here and kill this man,' that means kill me, 'then you are not a man,'" said Putruss, explaining that the threat was made by a woman inside his store.
Putruss said he locked the door after hearing the threat, but that another woman with the customer later unlocked the door to let Mikhail, Petros, and Kastaw inside.
Putruss said he and his son were attacked by the men.
Outside of court Wednesday, Putruss said he suffered two broken vertebrae in his back and that his son was bruised.
"My clients will be vindicated," said Defense Lawyer Doraid Markus. "You have a small view of a much larger picture here. This is a quick rush to judgment."
According to Markus, the trouble started the day before the fight when the bride-to-be wanted to take her dress home and wound up calling the police.
Putruss said the customer wanted to take her dress without paying off a balance of $1,150.
According to the woman's family, she later paid off the balance and took her dress home.
The fight, according to Putruss, took place the next day when the woman returned to ask for alterations and was told she would not be serviced.
“She told me ‘I’m going to call my husband to come and kill you here and teach everybody here a lesson,’” Putruss said.
Putruss said he’s been in business for more than 25 years and he’s never seen or experienced anything like this. “It taught us a lesson to take extraordinary precautions.”
Putruss said he wants a trial. "They can look at the video. It's self explanatory."
The misdemeanor charges carry a penalty of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Putruss wants the charges upgraded to felonies so he can seek restitution for the damages.
