FRANKLIN, Mich. -- Six children were hurt Tuesday morning when a teacher backed through a window and into her preschool classroom in Franklin, school officials said.

“I heard a really loud bang and by the time I even got to the preschool room, the teachers were running out of there saying, ‘Call 911!’” said Huda School and Montessori Principal Azra Ali.

Ali said there were 17 children, ages 3 and 4, inside the classroom at about 8:30 a.m. when the incident occurred.

Village of Franklin Police Chief Patrick Brown said four of the six children who were injured were taken to a hospital.

“The injuries themselves appear to be fairly minor. In the broad sense, there are some lacerations, bruises. There doesn’t appear to be any broken bones,” Brown said.

Ali said the teacher who was driving the white Jeep Cherokee backed into her classroom while she was moving her car to a “designated area.”

Ali said the children were never left unattended while the teacher was moving her car, that there were other teachers and parents inside the classroom.

“Preliminary indications are that the employee might have hit the accelerator as opposed to the brake of the vehicle … catapulting the vehicle through the glass window,” Brown said.

Brown said the teacher was not physically hurt.

Ali said there would be counselors in the school for the rest of the week to work.

The school, which is located on Franklin Road, is closed for the remainder of the day.
