ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The Troy Police Department's surveillance unit has arrested a man believed to be involved in a rash of smash-and-grab burglaries in Oakland County.
Burglaries have been reported in Auburn Hills, Pontiac, Keego Harbor, West Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Township and three in Rochester Hills.
Investigators said the burglar targeted mostly Subway restaurants.
Authorities said in most of the robberies the suspect used a brick or large rocks to break the store’s windows and then the cash register drawer is stolen.
"It's repetitive. If he hits one he's going to have a similar set up in the same building, so he's going to follow his little routine," Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said.
On Friday, officers watched as the suspect stopped near a Lowe's store in Southfield where he exited his car and collected several landscape rocks. He re-entered his car and drove to a Subway Shop in the area of M-59 and Williams Lake Road in Waterford Township.
Troy officers arrested the suspect after he broke out the glass door of the shop, entered, and stole the cash drawer. Uniformed Waterford Township officers responded to the scene and the suspect was turned over to their custody. He is currently being held by the Waterford Township Police Department pending arraignment on Sunday March 14. He is a 48 year old male.
The investigation will continue in an attempt to determine if this suspect is connected to the other burglaries.
"A lot of those stores are small business owners. This affects them in terms of insurance, loss windows, just a host of things. People can't really afford these days to have their business kicked in the teeth," Bouchard said.
