Teen Charged In Tanning Salon Peeping Case

18-Year-Old Salon Employee Charged

POSTED: Monday, March 15, 2010
UPDATED: 10:42 am EDT March 16, 2010

An 18-year-old tanning salon spa employee faces up to five years in prison after he was accused of taking a cell phone picture of an undressed man as he got out of a tanning bed.

Ryan Woods of Sterling Heights was arraigned Monday in Macomb County Circuit Court on charges of capturing or distributing an image of an unclothed person.

Police said the incident happened at the Image Sun Tanning Centers on 21 Mile Road in Macomb County on Sept. 19, 2009.

The man, who asked only to be identified as Steve, said he went to the salon for a routine tanning session.

"I asked for a certain level bed. I was told the beds were full on that side and that I'd have to go to a lower level bed," Steve said.

Steve said after he was finishing tanning, he started to put his clothes back on but noticed something hanging over the 10-foot wall of the open ceiling.

"I noticed a black object while I was putting my socks on over the wall," he said. "I pulled myself up, wrestled with the person on the other side who was trying to get his object back."

Wearing only his pants and socks, Steve said he quickly opened the tanning room's door.

"At this point, the gentleman was getting off a chair that was there, he ran toward the door and tried to shut it. I punched it open and I said, 'What are you doing?'" he said.

Steve said he confiscated a camera phone from the 18-year-old employee who had been running the tanning salon and called the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Woods was questioned by authorities, admitted to taping Steve and was arrested, said police.

"It's a serious crime, it's an invasion of one's privacy," said Macomb County Sheriff's Office Capt. Tony Wickersham.

Wickersham said authorities searched Woods' car, home and computers, and found CDs of more than 100 images of what appear to be partially dressed men in a tanning salon booth

"I think it would be safe to say there were at least 40 different people," he said. "If anybody at that tanning salon has a concern, please call the sheriff's office."

Steve said he's terrified that nude images of himself are posted somewhere on the Internet.

"I'll never be the same because of it. You'll always wonder what if? What if he sent out these photos? What if this wasn't the first time he took my picture?" he said.

Steve said he ended up having an anxiety attack and was hospitalized the night of the incident, and that he even suffered a mild heart attack from the stress.

"This is an unfortunate incident and it's the act of an individual, not the business. We have done nothing wrong," the tanning salon said in a statement.

Woods was immediately fired and the company said it does not allow employees to have camera phones in their locations. A surveillance system has been installed in the Macomb Township location.

Woods is free on bond pending a May 24 court date. He does not have a criminal history.
