LANSING, Mich. -- Local political figures have pounded Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s declaration of Saturday being “Meatout Day” in Michigan.
Attorney General Mike Cox had announced a “Meat Out Day” barbecue at his campaign headquarters in Livonia. It was outside his 14155 Farmington Road headquarters from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution designating Saturday as National American Meat and Poultry Appreciation Day. H. Res. 1199 “honors and recognizes the contributions made by the farmers, ranchers, processors, packers, and other meat and poultry industry employees.”
Rep. Candice Miller, who co-sponsored the resolution, said Granholm “made a huge mistake when she urged Michiganians to forgo eating meat this Saturday.”
Earlier this month, Granholm instituted “Meatout Day” to encourage Michigan residents to choose not to eat meat Saturday and instead try different recipes rich with vegetables, fruit and whole grains.
The Michigan Farm Bureau blasted the proclamation as "unconscionable and an insensitive slap in the face" to livestock farmers and meat-eating residents.
Following the resolution passed by the Republican-led Senate, Granholm tried to soothe hurt feelings Wednesday by issuing an additional proclamation declaring Saturday to be an all-inclusive Agriculture Day in Michigan.
