LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A Lyon Township race horse is resting comfortably at his home after an emergency rescue on a frozen pond.
Lyon Township Fire Inspector Don Collick said crews responding to an emergency call Monday evening found the horse, named Red, up to his neck in a pasture pond.
Collick said Red's owner was already out on the pond in a boat trying to reel the animal in with a rope.
"As he (the owner) was coming back toward shore, he capsized on over. We were able to get him out fairly quickly and he was OK," Collick said.
After getting Red's owner back to shore, Collick said crews turned their attention back to rescuing the horse from the freezing water.
Crews wrapped an old hose under the horse's stomach, using it as a sling, and hoisted him out.
"There was blood coming out of his nose. We hooked up oxygen to him and gave him oxygen for, I don't know, about 15 or 20 minutes," Collick said.
The horse spent about 45 minutes in the water, and couldn't stand on his own for several hours. The horse has rope burns around his neck from his owner trying to pull him out, but he's expected to make a healthy recovery -- much to the relief of his rescuers.

Collick said the rescue was rewarding, and unique.
"Lyon used to be the horse capital of Michigan, that's slowly gone away but we still have a lot of horses," he said. "In my career this is the first time I've ever had that. So, it's pretty good."
